Welcome to the Classical Archives' March Concert from the Sydney Opera House! This first month of spring in the northern hemisphere is a veritable celebration of the birthdays of some of our favorite composers. In a program featuring solo, chamber, and orchestral works both well known and not, our March concert pays tribute to the joy their music brings to us.
We begin with the lovely Barcarolle, Op.61 by Chopin, who was born on March 1 in 1810, followed by a remarkable performance of the Moldau by Bedrich Smetana, whose birthday is March 2; he was born 14 years after Chopin. Two works that may be new to some in our audience - Vivaldi's Concerto for flute, oboe, and bassoon and Telemann's Quartet in F for Recorder, Oboe, Violin, and Harpsichord - offer an interesting comparison of the two composers in works with very similar instrumentation. Vivaldi was born on March 4, 1628 and Telemann on March 14 of the previous year.
Between those two compositions is the little-known, yet evocative Sonatine for piano by Maurice Ravel, whose birth date is March 7, 1875. After them is a performance of the well-known Radetzky March by Johann Strauss I, born in 1804 on the same day as Telemann. The final scheduled work on the concert is an orchestral work by Bach, born on March 21, 1865; it's his First Orchestral Suite. While not performed as frequently as some of his other orchestral works - the Brandenburg Concerti, for example - it is certainly every bit as beautiful. Our March Concert's encore is the lively final movement of the Symphony #102 - one of the twelve "London" symphonies - by Haydn, who was born on March 31, 1732.
